“Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.
Many people talk about meditation, but aren’t really aware of what it is or how it works. I have been meditating for almost five years now and I contribute a lot of my rapid growth, perspective, and self-awareness to meditation.
Headspace, a great meditation app, offers a great explanation of meditation. “Meditation isn’t about becoming a different person, a new person, or even a better person. It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning to observe them without judgment. And eventually, you may start to better understand them as well.
At the start of each season, I participate in a 21-day Meditation session with Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra. This is my fifth year participating in the sessions. Everyone knows who Oprah is, but let me tell you a little about Deepak Chopra. He is the co-founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing, the founder of the Chopra Foundation, and a world-renowned pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation. He is board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, and metabolism. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and a clinical professor in the Family Medicine and Public Health Department at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author of more than 85 books translated into over 43 languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers.
Today is the the first day of this season’s 21-day meditation session titled The Path to Empowerment. Today we begin our journey to discover the unlimited power within us all. We will explore the many different types of inner power and how we can utilize them to actualize our inherent potential and fulfill our desires for a healthier, happier, and more loving life. The power within our Being is the full power of the universe, and we can access and use this energy in all aspects of our life – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
In today’s meditation, we understand that the source of power is not outside of us. Real strength is not brute force, intimidation, or physical dominance. That is a limited, fear-based kind of power. True power is the unbounded, creative, nurturing force of Nature that expresses itself through our innermost awareness – our empowered self.
