The Queen’s #Homecoming

Beyonce performs at the 2018 Coachella Festival

In case you didn’t know, Beyonce the Gawdess, released her HOMECOMING documentary on Netflix at midnight on Wednesday, April 17 and it BLEW MY MIND! Beyonce is a mother, a wife, a sister, a daughter, an actress, a philanthropist, an actress, a writer, a singer, a dancer, a performer, and the list goes on to include a producer and much more. She is a force to be reckoned with!

While driving to work, I was listening to ‘Sway in the Morning’ and Mike Muse was telling the ‘gang’ and the ‘citizens’ about his experience at this year’s Coachella festival. He was full of excitement and the way he described the event made me feel extreme FOMO. I could feel his energy! He began talking about how artists now have to implement surprise guests and acts in their performances, when Sway chimed in saying, “Yeah, Beyonce did that. She raised the bar high!”

Raising the bar high is an understatement when describing what the Queen has accomplished. I believe she has outdone herself. After watching the documentary, I felt super inspired to push myself harder to achieve my goals and aspirations. I know what it feels like to have a burning desire inside and be willing to do whatever it takes to bring it to fruition, but Beyonce had just given birth to a set of twins as she was preparing for the festival. Can you say will power?

As if I didn’t already think Beyonce was everything, after watching the documentary, I know that she is everything and more. I’m ALWAYS excited when she allows us into her world! She had a vision and she did everything and more to bring it to life so the world could experience what she experienced as much as possible. I felt so many emotions while watching HOMECOMING, the documentary of Beyonce’s experience of being the first African-American woman to headline the Coachella festival now known as Beychella. I actually felt like I was there and it gave me a huge since of pride because I received my bachelor’s degree from a Historically Black College and University (University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) so I felt right at home. Not only were the performances extraordinary, but she dropped knowledge in between the performances with words from Maya Angelou, Nina Simone, herself, and others. It made me extremely proud to be an African-American woman. It inspired me to learn more about who I am and the magic I have inside (you have that magic too.)

Homecoming is a HUGE deal at my HBCU. Homecoming at my HBCU is like Mardi Gras in New Orleans! Schools shut down, businesses shut down, etc. because it is a time to reconnect and reunite with those we have created so many memories and experiences with. People come back to their HBCUs during Homecoming from all over the country. There are people attending the Homecoming festivities that did not even attend college at all, so I must say Beyonce definitely delivered a great representation of the HBCU Homecoming experience. It’s always exciting watching the band perform, seeing the sororities and fraternities stroll, watching the football game, and enjoying the parties and other festivities that are usually happening for a full week. HOMECOMING IS SOOOOOOOO LIT !!!

According to Variety, the multi-talented Gawdess has signed a three-project deal with Netflix and I’m sure the next two will be just as ‘stop what you’re doing and watch’ as HOMECOMING is.

It amazes me how Beyonce is able to do all that she does in this world and still keep her balance and a sense of self. She’s also very resilient. I am so proud of her and all of her success. I can’t wait to see what she does next and it will be super interesting to see what her children will conquer in their lifetimes if they choose to share that with us. I am honored to be alive during Beyonce’s reign and I want her to know that “I see you Bey; I hear you Bey; I’m learning from you Bey and I’m grateful that you have dedicated your life to serving us.”
